Scientists study cow genes to boost beef, dairy safety

US - Science took a big step this week toward being able to detect livestock at risk of mad cow disease. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that the first draft of the bovine genetic sequence has been completed. The research project could lead to faster methods of detecting and tracking mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), in cattle. The data could also help identify animals that are resistant to BSE.
